Vision
We believe that all people are created equally.
We strive to treat everyone equally with the dignity and respect they deserve.
We believe that a diverse and inclusive work place creates a stronger culture and more empowered and productive teams.
We envision and work towards a future where our patients see doctors who look like them, grew up in neighborhoods like theirs, and share backgrounds similar to their own.
We welcome and encourage everyone in our department to be champions of diversity, equity, and inclusion, regardless of their personal background.
We advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in our residency, hospital, and the community at large and work on initiatives to educate ourselves and our community on DEI issues.
Mission
The LLUEM Residency Program is committed to training a diverse group of emergency medicine residents to better serve our diverse community. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, comprised of students, residents, and faculty, was created with the goal of increasing the number of physicians from underrepresented groups within our specialty to better represent the patient population we serve. We recognize that differences in culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, identity, religion, and gender make each individual unique and valuable. Through mentoring, educational initiatives, and outreach programs, our aim is to recruit individuals from underrepresented and marginalized communities to become leaders in emergency medicine. We strive to create a program that acknowledges the histories and experiences of underrepresented communities, addresses health inequalities along with the associated social determinants of health, and fosters an inclusive environment for residents to thrive.
2021-2022 DEI Committee Board
Our committee is led by an executive board made up of three residents: Dr. Gretchen Stumhofer (Chair, PGY3), Dr. Biosha Jones (Vice Chair and Hospital Liaison, PGY2), Dr. Josh Perese (Secretary and Community Liaison, PGY2), and our faculty mentor and assistant program director, Dr. Liz Fierro. We hold regular meetings attended by students, residents, fellows, and faculty alike.

Simulation, journal club, and conference education
Last academic year we held a DEI focused journal club evening, had a guest lecturer and conference education on implicit bias, and a day where we ran through simulations to practice responding to micro and macro-aggressions while in the ED. We’re just getting started for this year but we have many more plans in the works!

National Level Involvement
Our Vice Chair, Biosha Jones, holds a leadership position in the EMRA Diversity and Inclusion Committee representing us at the national level, working on initiatives that affect EM residents across the country, and bringing the big picture perspective to our residency committee.

GME and Medical Student Collaboration
Loma Linda has a DEI committees at the student-level, GME-wide level, and faculty-level. Members of our executive board attend the GME-wide DEI meetings where we can collaborate with other specialities to work on DEI issues throughout the institution. We also collaborate with the student chapters of SNMA and LMSA on campus and have an active presence at local and national meetings.
Research
There are opportunities to pursue projects with faculty from the School of Public Health and the Center for Health Disparities & Molecular Medicine on campus.
Diversity Second Look Event
Recruitment is very important to us and we’re still figuring out what works best. In previous years we’ve had a diversity pre-Interview dinner and a special interview day. With another season of virtual interviews we’re trying a Second Look Event this year. Applicants, expect to hear more about this by email during the interview season!
